i have been wondering about this - what are mastodon's suggestions based on? they always seem to be #lowercase instead of #CamelCase

Few years there were big discussions if it is better to use #camelcase or #lowercase on as #hashtag in #mastodon .

I think the conclusion/recommendation was to use lowercase only.

Is there anything new on this? I see plenty of camel case hashtags.

Did Mastodon in the meantime became case agnostic or does it still matter?

#Accessibility question, in particular for folks using screen readers (but I'm interested by everyone's perspective): how important are case and #punctuation to you?

For instance, is it harder to read a message, or a video transcript, if it's totally #lowercase and without punctuation?

@Homebrewandhacking I really don’t want to be the pedant, but I had this discussion a few weeks ago because of misunderstandings:

- camelCase: Called so because there is hump in the “middle” of the word
- snake_case: because, yeah, you can see it
- PascalCase: because that is how the programming language “Pascal”’s requirements for casing were; used the first in Pascal
- UPPERCASE: as you can see
- lowercase: same

It is helpful to use #PascalCase for hashtags because the screen readers can then identify and pronounce it correctly, otherwise they would just speak out each letter separately:

- #PascalCase: spoken out as “Pascal Case”
- #lowercase: spoken out as “el-o-double-u-e-r…”

@BryceWrayTX yup. Right, but also it seems to deduplicate & ignore cases, and when I explicitly type the capital letters it still gives me back the #lowercase version. It would certainly add extra complex science to have track all the variations and know which is correct, but at least it could follow my lead based on the #camelCase I type, or show multiple versions (if they were used) for encouragement.

If #Mastodon wants to encourage #CamelCase hashtags, why are all the autofill options in #lowercase ..

@jamesbritt @blindscribe @elan Question: does hashtag search treat #CamelCase and #LowerCase equally? Is there a way to script an instance so it defers to CamelCase? Seems like when I try to add a hashtag in CamelCase it’s often changed to all lower in the suggestions.

@DavidM_yeg these are all good practices, especially the #CamelCase suggestion for #HashTags. However, when typing, the hashtag detector brings up suggestions in all #LowerCase so it defeats the effort, especially since it can be tricky to dismiss. The text handling seems awkward at times. I’m using the app, so perhaps things are better on the browser version. Curious how updates and new features are created for different versions.
