In the 1920s, Orchard Street, with its pushcarts, was the capital of the Jewish Lower East Side, NYC.

When in NYC, for a fun and interesting experience, visit the Tenement Museum....on the same street...one-hundred years later.

A man sells potatoes on the street from a pushcart, along with many other vendors, on the Lower East Side, sometime in the late 19th or early 20th Centuries.

Great photo...the clarity, the subject, the LES and the smile.

Born in 1916, Rebecca Lepkoff grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Working as a dancer at the 1939 World's Fair, she saved enough money to buy a second-hand camera. She first photographed Essex and Hester Streets, which were full of pushcarts. Her photographs captured people in the streets, especially children, as well as the buildings and the signs on store fronts
