"In practice the text of #Lucretius rests upon two Leiden manuscripts [...] The older and better is O (Voss. Lat. F. 30)Offsite Link. It was written not long after 800 in the Palace School of Charlemagne. A contemporary corrector, using a distinctive insular hand, emended the text and in places filled up lacunae left by the orignal scribe. This hand has been recognized as that of Dungal" https://www.historyofinformation.com/detail.php?id=3217

#Lucretius asks, if we don’t worry about our nonexistence prior to our life, why should we be concerned about not existing after our life ends? https://academic.oup.com/book/36858/chapter/322053033 https://dfaria.eu/news?hashtag=2023-04-06T00:10:02Z
In January 1417 Poggio Bracciolini discovered #DeRerumNatura (written by #Lucretius in the 1st century BC outlining #Epicureanism) in a German monastic library.
That copy was copied from an earlier 9th century text corrected by an Irish monk, #Dúngal.
Dúngal also wrote a book explaining to #Charlemagne how two solar eclipses could occur in the same year, and, incidentally, the structure of the #cosmos as he understood it.

Referring to Lucretius and De Rerum Natura
“To spend your existence in the grip of anxiety about death, he wrote, is mere folly. It is a sure way to let your life slip from you incomplete and unenjoyed. He gave voice as well to a thought I had not yet quite allowed myself, even inwardly, to articulate: to inflict this anxiety on others is manipulative and cruel.”

"Such explanations put effect for cause and are based on perverted reasoning; since nothing is born in us simply in order that we may use it, but that which is born creates the use. "
I'm re-advertising on Mastodon my translation and comment of passages of Lucretius' "De Rerum Natura", starting with the "Swerve":

Everything in the Universe is made of atoms, the infinite variety of Nature is produces by random swerves.
