One of the things that makes #ScienceFiction so powerful is its ability to ask how a system would work under some different social arrangement.

It's a radical proposition. Don't just ask what the gadget does: ask who it does it *for* and who it does it *to*. That's the foundation of #Luddism, which is smeared as a technophobic rejection of technology, but which was only ever a social rejection of the specific economic arrangements of that technology.

I get that there are legitimate concerns with #AI #art, but the arguments I hear generally smack of #luddism. This is to be expected, of course. Most people don't engage in nuance, frequently overstating their arguments, but at least in political debate, you know you have tons of apologists who will ignore ridiculous claims. Here, lack of nuance will simply cost you the culture war. You're destined to lose that war eventually (perhaps not in your lifetime), but it may occur too fast as a result.

Few things bug me more than rampant knee jerk #Luddism.

Healthy #skepticism is one thing, but constantly spreading doom, gloom, hyperbole, and etcetera #FUD is another.

What makes it worse is that the priests of the New Luddism are #philosophers peddling purely #speculative #hypotheticals as truth, who are masquerading as qualified technology #scientists when they're not.

It's hard to see it little more than #fearmongering against #science. It's all very Things Man Was Not Meant To Make.

Recently I've deliberately placed more limits in my interactions with computers and more friction in my "user experience." I've relegated my use of computers to a desktop and a laptop only for the most basic imperative tasks. My smartphone is now little more than a glorified cellphone since I removed every unnecessary or distracting program. Eventually I want to revert to a dumbphone. I'm using computers the same way I used them as a kid in the late 1990s and early 2000s, i.e., minimally, briefly, and purposively.
