The Bachelor's Walk massacre occurred in Dublin, on 26 July 1914, when a column of troops of the King's Own Scottish Borderers were accosted by a crowd on Bachelor's Walk following the Howth gun-running operation. The troops attacked protesters with rifle fire and bayonets - resulting in the deaths of four civilians and injuries to 30 more. Luke Kelly senior, the father of Luke Kelly of The Dubliners, was one of the wounded.

Luke Kelly died on 30 January 1984 in Dublin aged just 43 years old. His gravestone in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin, bears the inscription: "Luke Kelly – Dubliner".

This is a interesting article by Fintan O'Toole about Ireland's membership of the EU and what it meant for Ireland generally and it's relationship with Britain.
One fascinating take away: Irish membership of the EU was opposed at the time by John B Keane, Luke Kelly and Michael D Higgins.

On 17 November 1940 Luke Kelly was born in Sheriff Street, Dublin. His father, also named Luke, was shot and severely wounded as a child by British soldiers from the King's Own Scottish Borderers during the 1914 Bachelor's Walk massacre.
