As I was cycling round the , it suddenly struck me that Britain is like someone at the end of a family tree, burning through the last of the assets they gained (inherited) from previous generations' exploitative activities & unwilling to admit that some serious changes are needed to their household if its not just going to crumble away... we are a Dowager Aunt, watching (fearing) the world passing us by

Interestingly in the , where I've lived for over 15 years, I've only seen two deer in that entire time.... perhaps, the countryside in the valley isn't right for them?

yes, a friend opened a light-meals/coffee place, which has a pretty good local monopoly in the last year, and while he can afford to run at break-even for some time (due to other interests) even he is having difficulty keeping the business viable... difficult times indeed for

Research from Ernst&Young, for the County Councils Network, suggests that have for the most part recovered to pre- levels of activity while areas have not (which certainly chimes with anecdotal evidence from around the ).

If so, this suggests that if material well-being has returned to displace identity politics in ' minds that the usual rural conservative vote may be a lot softer than the may have hoped...

Oh dear...

The 's idea for community ownership of is a really interesting approach;

here in the we have had a community owned (community built) network (delivering much better service than the majors) for around a decade & it has been a major success.

A programme of support for community (from this experience) would seem likely to be a game-changer for our response to

While many people have taken the chance to fly for their , the UK remains a string contender - partly due to cost(s), partly due to the hell that international travel remains (inc. all those queues now we're no longer an EU member state) & partly because for a short(er) break a staycation may make sense.... and across the fort key areas, bookings are up.

No wonder, there's more traffic in the since Easter!

yes, there may be some specific consideration in the , not least of all (like me) early retirement (the valley is a bit of a ghetto of later life professionals) and the incidence of world class community making very easy (if you have a professional/servcies job)

Cycling round the yesterday, I was struck by the relative quietness of the roads during a working Monday... sometimes, it seems like our recent travails have had a major impact on road usage (locally at least).

My guess is , high prices (forcing more consolidated car journeys - join gin together previously operate journeys) & the general have reduced the amount of time we spend on the road... which may be no bad thing!

For the second day in a row, the hot air balloon came drifting by along the , presumably launched from around the Crook O’ Lune. I saw it land above Melling yesterday., this time it seems headed further up the valley

Oh dear, is down with no explanation (again)...

Hardly a day goes by when I am not thankful for the weeks of hard work we all put in round here a decade ago to dig in our community, fibre-to-the-house ... still much better than any of the broadband oligopoly offer & what's more, ours!

in the - hurrah

I know many at local in the and I have seen how an inspection plays out.... the mental costs are extreme & the tales of inspectors who do not understand the specific character of some schools' work are common.

I know my friends are not trying to escape accountability when they argue for a new (collaborative & engaging) infection regime.

Its time to reform OFSTED, shifting the emphasis to collaboration rather than judgement if we want to support schools

Out here in the , like an increasing number of rural communities our is delivered by a community interest, non-profit, which also offers world class as opposed to Open Reach's dire service - and our prices have only risen by 10% in around a decade!

Seeking distraction from the catalogue of sh*t across today's papers, I turned to a book of Large Paintings that arrived from the online bookshop (which I've previously recommended to book lovers), to find this fabulous invocation of looking out of the window at a patch of sun coming through the rain... for those who know (or specifically the ) this is a common sight... take a second an enjoy before getting back to the sh*tshow!
