Happy everybody!

To celebrate, I'm going to make an epic thread explaining how is determined.

(And as I've said before, today is not , because the Chinese calendar is not lunar, it's . It's also not the only calendar that ties the months to the phases of the ).

So let's begin.

Happy Lunar New Year!

To mark the new year, tomorrow our family is going to have Char Siu (Chinese BBQ pork), a bacon and scallion stir fry, and a Chinese cucumber salad, and also probably watch an Asian film of some sort. (It might just end up being Everything Everywhere All At Once, which is close enough 🤪 )

People are referring to today as "".

It is not. The Chinese calendar is , not lunar. This means that, while the calendar months match the cycle of the moon, New Year is ALSO determined by the position of the sun.

My last boost is one I would've quote-tooted if I could, showing an elaborate wheel defining the 24 Solar Terms of the , which mark out the phases of the year.

The first solar term is Dongzhi, which is today, , which has been celebrated since the Han dynasty (2nd century BCE) as the end of the harvest season and the darkest day of the year, as recorded in The Rites of Zhou.

I'll be eating jiaozi today, northern-style dumplings.
