@WintaireJaes Same here. On my server (#lurk) we use Hometown, so lists can be exclusive: if you add someone to a list they disappear from your main home TL, and you only see them in the list. Also, with the ability to subscribe to hashtags, you don't need to follow that many people - it's, as you say, like an RSS feed reader.

one thing i love but also find deeply intimidating about mastodon (or at least the #lurk instance) is regularly being reminded of the sheer amount of things i know nothing about.

people share obscure software that they've dedicated their life to, art practices that never would have occurred to me, activism deeply specific to a cultural group or region. it's beautiful and overwhelming. there are so many things to learn in the world, and i will only ever know about such a small set of them.

@yaxu My only hypothesis is that #fedi instances win on context: they are small communities of shared interests. Say, here on #lurk, you're guaranteed that at least 60, maybe 70% of members are into live coding, or, at least, experimental music. Or software development. So a toot announcing a live coding event gets good interaction. Major platforms like Tw or Fb don't allow you to home in that well on your audience (and they also try to monetize it), so they end up being much less effective.

@agargara I think lists are a possible solution to this. They do require some work, though. But, generally, if I feel the main TL is becoming monotonous, the Local TImeline here on #lurk or one of my lists saves the day.
