On the 7th of May 1915 the Lusitania was sunk on her 202nd trans-Atlantic crossing, by a German U-boat 11 miles (18 km) off the southern coast of Ireland, killing 1,198 passengers and crew.

CourtMacSherry pier, last w/e

The CourtMacSherry lifeboat station responded to the Lusitania sinking in 1915, the crew rowed the 18km out & back.

There's a model of the ship at the entrance of the village.

The and are an interesting study in . The choice of coal bunker arrangement (transverse vs. wing bunkers) comes with numerous tradeoffs, but the curious one is the effect on damaged and survival.

Had Titanic had wing tanks per Lusitania, the long shallow ice damage may have been contained (and abated by counter-flooding intact bunkers).

Had Lusitania had a single hull, she would not have taken such a rapid list and may have survived for hours.
