Made some progress on my £40 mandolin-banjo rescue project. I'm rebuilding the collapsed pot using laser cut ply (hoping it will be stronger). It's skinned with 0.18mm/0.007" nomex sheet. That was hard work!

God I wish I had the money for actual luthiery classes.

I'm stuck on how to get or make a steamer like that. Hoses and gaskets I can handle, and I bet I could use one of my big T needles for the tip, but I am *not* comfortable modifying a pressure cooker. Any thoughts?

This is take 1. There may be a take 2.
Initial fit plays nicely with cautious trem use.
First nut I've cut. Glueing it in place now.

? ?
Going to try to shape my first nut.
I want the slots to point from the fretboard side toward the hockey stick headstock pegs.
I made a vise insert from a door hinge and bought a bench sander from a garage sale.
Also watched a StewMac and a Texas Toast video.

Ok, here is another pic of the top. What’s new? I filled in more of the original pickup routes then cut them for P-90s. This shows the P90 bases being fit checked.

Used a moto tool to rough the routes in, then an exact-o-knife to trim to about a mm of final dimensions, then jewelers files to finish off. I figured making a router template & fixture would take me longer and it’s a one time job for a hobbyist.

Next: Drilling the P90 mounting holes…

Progress:
1. Glued in the neck block.
2. Glued in two floating englmann spruce quarter sawn braces from the neck to tail block. I learned that these late 60’s early 70’s MIJ thin lines usually have a neck joint flex issue. Found 1 that installed a floating rod from neck to tail block and reported success. Since I had the top off anyway, I’m trying this.

How is the guitar going? Well, it’s getting there. The top is almost recovered. A few small holes to plug and some binding repairs to make. I ordered the P-90 pickup kits and some Engelmann spruce for neck joint reinforcements.

Now, can anybody recommend or comment on if I should paint it…or let the scars show?

I scratched through the cover cloth on a gold foil trying to remove some gunk I got on it.
Any idea where to get new cloth?
Advice on disassembling a potted pickup?
It still works fine. I don't want to mess it up more.

This old ruined EA-250 is slowly coming together. Still working on the top. Then I must reinforce the neck joint and will show what I’m going to try.

I don’t have the pickups and they are ferociously expensive for what is left of this body, so I think I’ll put dog ear P-90’s on it…I’ll keep the replacement bridge floating like it was originally.

Working out designs for a fretless 5-string . Think short scale bass, but nearly as low range. The second image is the I built last year. Thinking going with a similar color palette.

Aching to make some sawdust.

Forgive them the geo-dependent mispronunciation of Also I haven't watched anything of this channel before that I'm aware of, but this is the true works of a complete madman (meant entirely in a positive way) 😮

Be honest should I build another guitar? I technically gave one away so I do have space... Thinking Thru-neck with thru-body bridge, 25" scale, 12" radius, and tele style pickups...

Blast from the past. Nik Huber Dolphin (2004 Summer NAMM special build) with a Carr Rambler amp which I later very unwisely sold.

Still getting the hang of things around here, so I might as well do a small post.

After a lifetime in the beer and wine industry, I've been focusing lately on my skills in and and how to make a living with them.

I've also moved on to doing some to keep the kegerator stocked.

This will probably be a fairly quiet account with pictures of what's been going on in the shop and the occasional dumb joke.

Cheers!
