@clarissawam I had a book years ago which had common Luxembourgish expressions. All of my #luxembourgish friends told me never to use anything from that in public. Probably a wise tip, I would have been deported by now.

Loving my #Luxembourgish classes, but seriously you guys. We all read a bit differently than we write, but we don’t make it into a rule.
Anglophones for example also say “Have you seen’em” or even “You seen”em?” instead of
“Have you seen him”, but they don’t really want us to writte that way :)
I recently started watching a TV show in #Luxembourgish. For some reason it really reminds me of the #German I used to hear when working as a bartender in Moselle Valley. Took me an episode or 2, but I can sort of follow it now.
And yes, the show is great so far!
Congrats to Leminh Nguyen from the MSc Voice Technology who was nominated for the prestigious Ben Feringa Impact award because of his groundbreaking work on Luxembourgish Speech Recognition! 💻🗯️ Freely available, #OpenAccess #speechTech for #Luxembourgish 👏🇱🇺 well done!!

#Languages in which I could confidently and politely order a #beer:
#english
#french
#spanish
#luxembourgish
#german (maybe)
Please understand that, with the exception of English and French, I won’t be able to say much else after I order the beer…and depending on how many beers I do order, things aren’t looking great for those two languages either.

Interesting. We rode through the village of Blumenthal today and I wondered about the name again (which translates to “flower valley”) and just now found the answer:
Nothing to do with flowers (as I suspected), but thought to be of Celtic origin, referring to either BELAUN (sun god) or BELISAMA (goddess of the hunt). #luxembourgish
TIL That Piisch (pl. Pijen) in #Luxembourgish means perch as well as peach.
For an upcoming project (TRAVOLTA – Tracing Attitudes and Variation in Online Luxembourgish Text Archives) we have two open PhD positions with a background in #nlproc, computational #linguistics, #sociolinguistics or variation.
We will develop state-of-the-art tools for small-language NLP and use them to trace the development of #Luxembourgish into a fully-fledged written language.
Info about the project, including the job profiles, can be found here: https://purschke.info/en/travolta/

Den Zenter fir d'Lëtzebuerger Sprooch huet eppes Neits: elo kann ee sech net nëmmen eenzel Wierder am LOD ulauschteren, mä och ganz Sätz. An dës Lëtzebuerger Sätz gi vu kengem anere wéi dem Max Kuborn opgeholl, vum ale Wiederfräsch vu RTL.
Dat sinn am ganze 50.000 eenzel Sätz déi opgeholl ginn, an déi kann een dann op LOD.lu lauschteren.

In the latest episode of the SciLux podcast I was given the opportunity to talk about my work, e.g., how we build #nlproc resources for #luxembourgish, how we use #citizenscience to examine the role of #language in the public sphere, how in #luxembourg language is always a question of politics, and of course about our brand new “Culture & Computation Lab” that tries to combine data science work with a critical scholarly perspective on digitization.

Studying Luxembourgish through French is making my head fizz. I bought my textbook years ago when it was only available in French and put it on the back burner. Now that it's available in German, I'm too stingy to buy what's essentially the same book again.

@stevo_lux True. I moved to #Luxembourg more than 4 years ago and I haven't found myself in a situation where #Luxembourgish was indispensable. Practically all my meetings are in English and general conversation in French and Italian. I should make more efforts in learning Luxembourgish but it seems that Portuguese is even more useful here ;-) @1066steve
