I have a couple of #Linux laptops which have #firmware updates available, but theyβre not running anything with #LVFS/etc installed.
Q: Is there a Linux distro designed to do (LVFS-based?) firmware upgrades on machines like these, when simply booted from a USB stick?
I /can/ dig into #EFI stuff if needed, but from memory Iβd really *really* prefer not to β¦ π
#psa for #linux distributions that don't update #kde on stable releases: Discover < 5.27.2 will not work properly with #fwupd < 1.8.12 / #lvfs due to a user agent issue. If you update #fwupd to 1.8.11, Discover will start showing an error. But if you update fwupd to 1.8.12, everything will be magically fixed thanks to https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/commit/11075b4abf6d0f6952f25151a4a990ba855cd7b3 . So...probably a good idea to update fwupd to 1.8.12 (or backport the fix!)

Too often, updating a device firmware means booting on FreeDos to run a proprietary utility. But LVFS might put an end to that legacy practice in a near future.

I've also tagged #LVFS 1.5.0 which is the webservice that #fwupd uses for metadata: https://lvfs.readthedocs.io/en/latest/news.html
I'm not sure "releases" make a whole lot of sense for webapps that are typically deployed multiple times per week, but the Linux Foundation asked me to do them anyway. If nothing else it's a good recap for vendors of what's new and fixed.
A few companies (or agencies?!) are syncing the #LVFS public firmware archive every day at midnight, as in 00:00:00 exactly. This causes a pretty big load spike for a few minutes. Ideas?
Just installed a slew of firmware updates on my #ThinkPad X1 Carbon 30th anniversary edition. The Linux Vendor Firmware Service (#LVFS) and tooling (#fwupd) make this so easy. https://fwupd.org/
@hughsie, thank you so much for this.
New firmware for your @PINE64 #PinePhone and #PinePhonePro modem, now with (beta) call recording support!
As always, you can get it from #lvfs and GitHub(https://github.com/the-modem-distro/pinephone_modem_sdk/releases/tag/0.7.1)
Have fun!

@len @postmarketOS @shiftphones SHIFT6mq is one of the #linuxphones but there are many more of them, I have a Oneplus 6 2nd hand here. However, it won't have #fwupd support as the vendor does not supply the firmware to #LVFS. @shiftphones on the other hand is maybe a bit more expensive, but you get support from the vendor regarding fwupd, but also repairability and sustainability.

I have finally upgraded to a laptop that was new enough to be supported by #LVFS. Joy spread across my face as I saw Discover install new firmware on this E490.
