A slide from a talk I gave recently to the and District Archaeological Society - Charles who was born .

In September 1859, Lyell, who was the President of the Geological Section, gave the opening address at the Annual Meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Having previously been a sceptic on the theory of the ‘Antiquity of Man’, Lyell gave his support to Prestwich and Evans: “...I am fully prepared to corroborate the conclusions which have been recently laid before the Royal Society by Mr. Prestwich, in regard to the age of the flint implements associated in undisturbed gravel, in the north of France, with the bones of elephants, at and Amiens.”
