Now, let’s go back in time, way back! In 1976 Joni Mitchell—one of the greatest ever who started out as a folk musician, but early on embarked on journeys through various musical genres—performed with a jazz band comprising guitarist Pat Metheny, keyboardist Lyle Mays, bassist Jaco Pastorius, saxophonist Michael Brecker, and drummer/percussionist Don Alias.

The show was filmed and released as a double LP and film with the title “Shadows and Light”; here’s the first song after the intro, “In France They Kiss on Main Street”:

Another wonderful #PatMethenyGroup album. #PatMetheny's & #LyleMays' compositions are still jazzy, but getting more and more Latin influenced. 'Third Wind' is an amazing piece.

A splendid progjazz album with a stunning side long title track, #PatMetheny and #LyleMays (with #NanaVasconcelos) are superb here. One of my fav #Metheny albums.

#PatMetheny's first collaboration with #LyleMays (k). Also there's #EberhardWeber (b) & #DannyGottlieb (d). A fine, soft jazz album with gorgeous melodies and superb #Metheny guitar playing.

I am still stunned by the loss of #JeffBeck & #DavidCrosby however this woman, who David said was by far the best singer songwriter, is still with us and performed at Newport last year…yes, of course I am speaking of #JoniMitchell….her best touring band “Shadows and Light” a powerhouse of jazz stars…some who are no longer with us…#jacopastorius #MichaelBrecker #LyleMays #DonAlias Joni is still here and #PatMetheny is 68.
