Another favorite from the new “Joseph Stella: Visionary Nature” exhibition at Brandywine Museum of Art:
Joseph Stella (1877-1946), Lyre Bird, c. 1925, oil on canvas.
With two bonus bird friends…a bird-of-paradise on the right, and what appears to be a honeycreeper on the left? (A fairy wren would make more sense since that’s also native to Australasia, but it really does look more like a honeycreeper, native to the Neotropical Americas…?)

It is telling that the Australian master of mimicry and ventriloquism, the lyrebird reverberates the sounds of : Chainsaws and the three blasts of a timber-mill whistle.
has been a particular concern because of the birds’ proximity to large and sprawling cities.”
As the bird assemblage in their neighbourhood vanish, they now resort to mimic car alarms as well.

Favourite images of 2022: Male Superb lyrebird not quite in full show mode but the featherage is still very impressive. The sound show is even more superb. Dandenong Ranges, Kallista.

A lyrebird at Taronga Zoo has been mimicking the "evacuate now" alarm since the lions escaped their enclosure several days ago (the lions were all recaptured safely with no injury to any person or any lion).

I got kinda sick of all the algorithmic gaming going on at so stayed pretty quiet.
But I also loved hearing from folks who were open in sharing how they spent their days. So, I’m gonna try to be more of a sharer myself now that I’m here.

Today I returned to a big project I’m working on about the Goulds’ 19th century illustrations. Recording conversations with people about their stories like the & - to help

Nice case of acoustic : male exploits female antipredator response to mobbing alarm calls to manipulate her and prevent her from prematurely ending sexual interactions.
