Incredible video here. Another fire near Lytton BC. It’s from a bush camera near a historical Fire Lookout Tower engulfed by the raging wildfire. You really get a sense of the unbridled ferocity of the front of the fire in the wilderness. I believe this is the Kookimin Fire? (sp)

In fact, there are rather more fires than those across right now.

The fire outside Kelowna jumped the lake last night and now both the Cities of West Kelowna (pop. 35,000 - west side of the lake) and Kelowna (pop. 142,000 - east side) have neighbourhoods under evac orders.

20 years ago this week, August 2003, massive fires lead to the evacuation of 26,000 people in Kelowna. Below are quotes from two CBC articles from the time.

“The evacuation of 26,000 people 9,000 households from their homes in the Okanagan city over three days is the largest of its kind in Canada, city councillor Robert Hobson says.”

“Journalists and officials who toured the burnt-out areas of Kelowna, B.C., on Saturday were stunned by the effects of the fire that swept through parts of the city.”

"At least 203 houses were destroyed, and that total could rise as officials surveyed the damage, said Fire Chief Gerry Zimmerman.”

“After touring the damage Sunday, Prime Minister Jean Chrtien said the federal government would provide money to help rebuild the region, but didn't discuss how much.”

"Firefighters are also battling three major fires around Kamloops, the largest of which is the 260-square kilometre McLure fire north of the city.”

At that time the link between Climate Change and the fires was less well accepted (to say the least) outside the scientific community.

20 years, 3 Canadian Prime Ministers, 3 BC Premiers, and multiple terrible fire seasons later, and Canadian fossil fuel emissions continue to rise, new gigantic oil and gas projects continue to be built, and millions of people are impacted every day from smoke and fire. Some, like the town of Lytton BC, have been lost completely, possibly forever.

What, exactly, will it take, to End Fossil Fuel use??

Reflections on the destruction of by "Control the factors you are able to in your own life and try not to think too much about the government because they’re not doing a very good job. I’m going to survive the apocalypse with my garden and I’m going to learn how to light fires with sticks and that’s my approach to climate change. Everyone else should be doing the same." thetyee.ca/News/2023/05/31/Pos

Controversy over the rebuilding process in (namely, safety and resilience requirements). Lytton was nearly completely destroyed by wildfires last year, and was the site of the highest temperatures, ever recorded in Canada from the heat dome washingtonpost.com/climate-env
