I understand that this could mean I am in a classroom with Non-Māori. but at least I am at a distance and don't have to physically be in their presence. so there is a level of safety for me here. I can detach if I need to. I can use the mute button if I need to. Also as a full-time caregiver for my mother, there aren't many options to learn Reo Māori from a distance.

I would love to support Māori to set up dedicated instances; digital marae where you are in charge of the kawa and kaitiakitanga of your own data. You decide who can speak in the wharenui (join the instance) and on the marae atea (Federated timeline). You can even host an instance on a computer in your rohe if you want to. Not something you can do with Titter or TikTak ;)

#NZTwits #Māori the best way I can explain Mastodon in a te ao Māori concept is that each instance is like a hapū. They are self managing and have their own kawa and tikanga. However you can still interact with other hapū (instances), some you may be peaceful, however when a hapū wants to genocide you the hapū rangatira may decide for the best interest of everyone to cut off any negotiations and go to war with another hapū (block an instance). It is for the betterment of our people.

My re: #introduction to Mastodon (on new instance now) is that I am Amber. Grew up in Wellington and worked heavily in the IT corporate space. Gave it all up to come home to the Wairarapa where I have travelled across this whenua hunting out the stories of my #Māori tīpuna. I am pretty staunch about #LandBack and other kaupapa to see our whenua, awa and āngi return to rightful hands to restore Papatūānuku. As well as restoring our mātauranga with technology and innovation.
