Messier 24: Sagittarius Star Cloud

Explanation: Unlike most entries in Charles Messier's famous catalog of deep sky objects, M24 is not a bright galaxy, star cluster, or nebula. It's a gap in nearby, obscuring interstellar dust clouds that allows a view of the distant stars in the Sagittarius spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy.

M24 Sagittarius Star Cloud
Magnitude 4.6 star cloud located 10,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. It is about 600 light-years wide and lies in the Sagittarius Arm of our galaxy, the next inner spiral arm to our own. In the night sky, the star cloud appears about 9 times larger than the full Moon.
