A fragment of the old Monkland Canal passing under Castle Street in Glasgow.

Designed by James Watt, the Monkland Canal was completed in 1794 and was built to bring coal from the mines around Monklands into Glasgow. Most of it was filled in on the 1970s when the M8 motoway was built on top of it, but small fragments like this remain.

The Pinkston Basin in the North of Glasgow. At one time this formed the junction between the Forth and Clyde Canal (completed 1792) and the Monkland Canal (completed in 1794). The Monkland Canal has now mostly been filled in and replaced by the M8 motorway.

m8 tracker is a lot of fun for generating musical ideas, particularly when you're on the move, and just for musical play (which is to be differentiated from playing music). I don't have the hardware unit but have successfully run the headless version on a linux laptop and a linux handheld (steamdeck) using a Teensy board.
You install the m8 firmware to the Teensy, which hooks up via usb to your computer. Then install and run the m8c software, which displays the front end, on the computer. There is one more step, which is to route the sound from the Teensy board to your main computer. The best solution I've found on linux is to install qpwgraph, which gives you a way of visually hooking up the m8 (Teensy) outputs to your computer's speakers or headphone sockets, and using the computer's audio ins for sampling.

Working in the tracker format really brings home the extent to which DAW work is a visual exercise. In the tracker context the sound is the main point of reference. That may sound a bit obvious and perhaps silly but you listen more carefully when there is nothing much to look at but columns of hex characters. I think this mode of listening can be brought to other production environments with a bit of care.

My conclusion after a day of hacking around with the Midi Fighter Twister and the #M8 is that I only need to modify the Twister firmware in such a way that it is able to properly synchronize the clock, and sends 0 signals as well.

This way I can use the sequencer mode on the Twister to modulate arbitrary parameters on the M8, in turn providing exciting possibilities for live improv with a tracker! #synth #synthesis

This story about getting a 30mph speed limit on the #M8 through #Glasgow seems mental. For 9 years I drove along every bit of the M8 through Glasgow and you were lucky to get above about 25mph anyway in the nose to tail traffic. You’d do well to hit 30 ffs.
