There are very few passages in books that really horrify me. Some of De #Sade's writing does, and certainly I am horrified by what is told about horrific mass murders, tortures, etc. But to be truly horrified by an argument is not my usual way of going about things.

So I was brought to a halt in a review of William #Macaskill' s book, What we owe to cryptocurrency fraudsters, oops, I mean, What we owe to the future.

But all kidding aside, the main criticisms I have of #MacAskill's "What we owe the future" will be in three areas:
(a) his #utilitarianism based #ethics
b) his #growth focused theories of #economy.
c) his theories about #AI and about the "cosmic" #future of humanity.
Together, these points have the potential to establish a murderous #ideology, when the original goal is to ensure the long-term flourishing of humanity. #Philosophy #Longtermism
And: how independent is he vis-a-vis big capital #EA

Let me start with something positive about the book, at least the audiobook edition. Since I first met somebody with a Scottish accent more than 30 years ago, I have loved this accent. For example, watching a game of snooker feels even more enjoyable if the commenter has as Scottish accent. #MacAskill ’s accent is not very strong, but it’s enough to be enjoyable for me. So while listening to it during some bike rides last summer, I really enjoyed this aspect of the book. #Longtermism #Philosophy

I want to start a little series of short comments here about “What we owe the future” by W. #MacAskill. It will take some time. I’ll post something about it only once in a while. But I think it is important since the book got a lot of attention and I think it is very problematic, so it cannot be left uncommented. I am also going to include some comments on “The Precipice” by Toby #Ord, a book in the same direction. #Longtermism #Philosophy

Here's just one example. It also exemplifies how there's total lack of any warmth in the text, and how all value in life is seen only as instrumental.

So having children is ok, because they pay taxes, build infrastructure and can have new ideas.

Just read "What We Owe The Future" by William MacAskill - claimedly Elon Musk's favourite philosopher.

I admit that I had a critical stance on it even before reading, but still I can't but wonder how anyone can write anything this shallow on a subject this interesting.

MacAskill is a philosopher in Oxford, but at times this text feels more like ramblings of a hacker bit too overconfident on his intellectual capabilities.

This is the philosophy behind many Silicon Valley billionaires. A necessary read for anyone trying to understand how Musk and his circles are seeing the world.

#Longtermism sounds like a nice concept - who wouldn't think that we should think of future generations - but when it really means that all the suffering and injustice today doesn't really matter if in the future there will be a galactic civilization, you start to understand its inherent immorality.
