Yep, I got to fly in that baby once, way back in 1979. I still have the souvenir kit from it, which I need to rehome. The coolest thing was being able to see the curvature of the earth and the darkness above from that high up (60,000 feet or 18,300 meters).

Celebrating the anniversary of the first airplane to ever fly at twice the speed of sound: the Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket, piloted by Scott Crossfield, achieved Mach 2 on 20 November 1953. The plane is now on display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.
