The second day of is :)

I genuinely don't know if I could pick my favourite, so instead I'll talk about the newest facet of my fibre art hobby: machine knitting.

What a rabbit hole, man. My friend gave me a simple Brother bulky machine, and the next thing you know I've got a standard gauge electronic machine and a ribber, and someone nearby was selling a punchcard machine and a garter carriage for a stupidly low price, and and and.

There's a huge learning curve, of course, but the speed is enthralling. I made a blanket/wrap in a couple of days, rather than several months. (Still working on perfecting a sweater pattern that fits me the way I want, though.)

Exciting news!

Last year the textile guild first floated the idea to order a Kniterate, a computerized knitting machine to add to Noisebridge’s manufacturing abilities. We couldn’t cover the costs, and found people willing to help us order an industrial knitting machine from China with similar capabilities.

We passed our order in May, and it’s now on a ship that just left Los Angeles. To our knowledge, this is the only industrial knitting machine in the Bay Area that will be available to the public. Stay tuned for updates, comment if you’re interested in learning to use it, and get in touch if you are a makerspace interested in getting their own!

Okay! Swatched the three yarns for a stripy sweater (machine knit, because I'm not sure I want to knit a whole fingering weight sweater by hand). I tried each one at both tensions 5 and 6, gave the whole thing a soak, and it's now artfully draped over the drying rack. When it's dry, I can assess the feel of each fabric and take measurements (and possibly pictures).

I‘m currently extremely fascinated by circular machine knitting, especially how fast people can produce knitted socks. One question I have though.. How do you adjust the circumference of the sock for people with wide feet or ankles? The amount of needles and the circumference of the machine seem to be a constant. does anyone know?

I meant for this to be a quick project on the flatbed machine, but then I dropped a stitch and it ran too far down to fix... and I had no other mindless knitting WIPs for football games and knit nights, so I'm starting over by hand. It'll take longer, but that's okay.

Yesterday, I had a goal of making my first machine knit sweater! I made a lot of progress, and actually finished the machine knitting part, but didn't finish assembling the sweater until today

I even did a swatch!

I used the latch hook to do the ribbing in-place on the machine instead of doing the ribbing by hand afterwards as outlined in the pattern

I used this Pricewise sweater pattern: ravelry.com/patterns/library/p
