I learned something! I had no idea that wallabies can sit on their tails. It's one of the things that distinguishes them from kangaroos. This guy had lunch outside our kitchen (not provided by us) then hopped into the forest to sit & chill.

I think this is a red-necked wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus), Boboyan, Namadgi National Park, in the Australian Capital Territory.

The wallabies and pademelons usually go back to the forest at dawn, but these two wallabies stayed out a bit late this morning. Photos are to scale - one was much bigger than the other.

Interestingly, it's just been determined that wallabies are a different genus to kangaroos. So these have been changed from Macropus rufogriseus to Notamacropus rufogriseus. Yup, someone thought it would be funny to prefix the old genus with "not a".😂

#Outback #Queensland based wildlife carer. 1 of 6 known to be in the bush but may be more.
I specialise in #macropods care and rescue and do 95% of my own veterinary work due to distance and costs.
Currently have 25 #kangaroos and #wallabies in care but that changes regularly.
Our greatest threat, like the #usa is shooting and on my area 10,000 macropods are slaughtered by #farmers for the dog food industry in the biggest land based #wildlife #slaughter in the world.

I confess to feeling a need to #apologise if someone expresses an issue with something I write.

I find it infinitely more personally #enabling to edit or remove a post which has got up someone's nose rather than contact the mods on my instance and say please explain its removal.

I put a link to a #GoFundMe in running in a post the other day seeking support for my mental health managing work with #macropods only to them find some random woman had reported it as spam. I hope she's blocked me now because as interesting as her stuff was, I'm better off without people who see the entirety of #Mastodon as their place to express their views of the issue of the day and occasionally post something of her own, but very rarely.

Worst part was her predilection for #reposting shit from #twatter no matter how many times people say not to. I'm starting to block anyone doing that.

One large kangaroo was hopping around well outside the designated kangaroo zone 🦘

While the smaller macropods - the wallabies and pademelons - were much more sociable than usual.

I am in an unusual place for this. I rescue and rehab #macropods in the #Queensland #outback.
#Farmers are currently working to destroy all macropods on their properties. All of them. All species.
I've talked to people who have driven tens of thousands of kilometres and seen almost no live macropods. One couple last week had driven 18,000km and seen none.
All governments support the #slaughter in favour of farmers including the #labor party who will never get a vote from a #fharmer.
