I was extremely doubtful of the good re-reading I previously disliked could do, but I found it to be most illuminating.
The knowledge and experiences acquired during the 12 intervening years did make a difference, and I can only hope they have made a difference in how I approach life, not just #literature.

..in fin de siecle #Paris, the time of #MadameBovary and #Cheri. Comparing his behavior to those sources, #Pepe is restrained. In any case, cartoon characters (who I watched obsessively) were not role models for me. The roots of "#rapeculture" are complex and nasty, meant to hurt and dominate, I'd say, but I'm less than barely knowledgeable on the subject and I won't display my ignorance further. All I know is a lonely guy who's a pariah in his society and wants badly to be loved has my support.

Despite the fact that Flaubert's Madame Bovary has never left me since I first read it in the 90s, it's taken me until today, laid up in bed with a bad back, to watch the 1991 film with Isabelle Huppert (dir. Claude Chabrol). Can't say I enjoyed it per se but it was damn impressive. Reminded me of how the prosecutor Ernest Pinard described the novel during its trial - "No gauze for him, no veils - he gives us nature in all her nudity and crudity."
