I don't think there should be any difference between photographing in your home town or some faraway place; yet we all find more inspiration when travelling.

To prove the point, I made this picture a few years ago, while sitting in my local cafe in the UK at the time. I'd sat in this cafe most mornings for years, and as usual, had my camera around my neck.

Always take a camera with you, wherever you go.

Making great pictures on location is much harder than in a studio. However, the issues are similar - how I frame the person, and when to wait for the 'perfect' gesture or expression.

When photographing bands or musicians, I always meet beforehand, make them aware of where I'll be standing and discuss the type of pictures they want to achieve...

Photography is a two way process!

After all these years I still find it embarrassing to walk up to a stranger, and ask if I can photograph them! It's easier when in a different country, as I can play the tourist card. But in reality, the worst that can happen is they say "No".

Nobody has ever declined, well that's not strictly true, I've yet to have a Policeman agree...
