"A newly discovered star may give us clues to magnetars, how they work"

phys.org/news/2023-08-star-clu

"A magnetar is a type of neutron star with an extremely powerful magnetic field. The magnetic-field decay powers the emission of high-energy electromagnetic radiation, particularly X-rays and gamma rays."

I'm ofc still on record for having said I want to be a neutron star when I grow up.

Astronomers Find Strange Star Is a Powerful Magnet
skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-

Astronomers have found a star that has a magnetic field rivaling the strongest magnet humans have ever built β€” and it might explain the origin of highly magnetic cinders known as magnetars. The post Astronomers Find Strange Star Is a Powerful Magnet appeared first on Sky & Telescope .

Oh yeah, cool little thing I read about :
Up close, the magnetic field is strong enough to polarize the vacuum- as in, tear hard enough at space to create a virtual particle/anti-particle pair. Apparently this causes birefringence, ie refracting the light of the star depending on the direction you look at it.
Which is doubly fun, because the gravitational lensing is also strong enough that you can see the backside of the star from any vantage point.

A new interesting paper on Magnetars ...

Polarised light, captured by the new IXPE space observatory has indicated that this particular object might have a solid surface, with no atmosphere and only an electromagnetic field surrounding it.

science.org/doi/10.1126/scienc

Reminds me of a recent paper in which three bright hot spots were said to 'migrate' on the surface of another magnetar, which could have been a result of crustal tectonics (!!!) or twisted magnetic field lines creating dynamic hotspots.

Magnetars are def. weirdos.

An article to be published in "The Astrophysical Journal" reports the location of the origin of eight fast radio bursts (FRBs) detected between 2017 and 2020.
