I think the answer is probably not to try to use ProtonMail's PGP support at all and to just use #Mailvelope. Imagine the baddies getting their hands on your encrypted mailbox and somehow recovering your private key only to discover your emails are encrypted with an additional key.

My complete setup now looks like this:
GPG and SSH are handle by the onlykey-agent in the background, so that I can use ssh and gpg commands as usual.
GPG on the web is taken care of by #mailvelope, using the local gpg as a backend, so total integration there.
It still is a bit buggy sometimes, but works.

#Mailvelope hasn't been able to interoperate with GMail for months on end because it's pending some kind of opaque approval process at Google. I got a Mailvelope-encrypted work email today and the Thunderbird Autocrypt plugin didn't recognize it as encrypted; I think the sender couldn't use Mailvelope directly because of this issue and resorted to pasting their message into Mailvelope's standalone encryption tool, then copying the encrypted output into their corporate GMail account.

(I knew they used Mailvelope because it added a plaintext comment to the encrypted message)
