Just wrapped up my talk about the Open #Mainframe Project #Linux Distributions Working Group with Sarah Julia Kriesch!

The last keynote of the #OpenMainframeSummit this morning was... mine! Many thanks to my colleague Sudharsana for taking a picture during my talk about the Open #Mainframe Project Mentorship program, which uses the #Linux Foundation Mentorship infrastructure.

Listened to the "#Mainframe Myths Debunked! - with Jennifer Velasquez and Kirk Chadrick" episode of #IBMZ DevOps Talks today while on the train, and they talked about languages, git, developer environments and more! Lots of good stuff packed in a small podcast!
I think I enjoyed the "#COBOL is easy" bits the most. I keep saying this and people don't believe me 😅 Kids these days have it... harder! It's way different, but concept-wise it's quite straight forward.
This is an explanation of CICS programming (for IBM mainframes). Much of the worlds commerce and government is absolutely tied to this stuff.

wow, time flies, 23 years ago I started to work for this company, started in domestic payments system with COBOL, DB2 and z/OS
and now many years later doing #gcp cloud move
not the #mainframe of course, this will probably stay forever...

Wow, quite a collection!
MVS was a gem in its time, and released open source (long before closed source wss invented). Nice to see the #mainframe represented.
And from memory TK5 (a turnkey MVS/Hercules emulator system) has BREXX included (or it's easy to add. I forget)
Arsh Pratap was a mentee last summer and joined me as a *mentor* this summer for the Open #Mainframe Project Software Discovery Tool, so I'm excited to share that he's been voted onto our Technical Steering Committee! 🥳
I love how valuable this mentorship program has been to the project, half of our TSC is now former mentees. 👏

The Open #Mainframe Project has put together a list of 5 reasons to attend the Open Mainframe Summit in September: https://openmainframeproject.org/blog/5-reasons-to-attend-open-mainframe-summit-2023/
My mentorship keynote is among them! 🥳 Putting this talk together this talk while I'm wrapping up a really exceptional summer with my latest round of mentees on the Software Discovery Tool is really special ✨
This is just so cool, this person build a custom #mainframe with all the toggle switches, blinkenlights and all I want. I'm so jealous, I need one of those. Now what other projects do I need to sacrifice on the altar of nerdhood to find the time to build my own...

Caught up on an #OpenMainframe Project podcast from June today with an interview with Zareen Rydhan, a test engineer with Rocket Software. It was really nice to hear her perspective as a more generalist engineer from Silicon Valley.
Her shock when encountering use of a 3270 terminal in production (very common!) is what I hear ALL THE TIME from the rest of the tech industry.
I think it's easy to forget how unusual it is, living here in #mainframe land.

Finally got to listen to the latest z/Action! podcast about unboxing the IBM z16 rack mount.
I've spent a lot of time in data centers, so this was a fun one for me. And it literally came with a blue bow 😁💙🎀
