Every time I run into discussions of the differences in Malay and Indonesian languages I’m reminded of Malaysia’s then PM last year brazenly put forward the idea of making Malay an official ASEAN language.

Political repercussions aside, it’s a mistake thinking that the similarities in the two languages can easily be overcome by speakers of either language without running into a series of misunderstandings and thats before taking into account the wildly differing colloquial forms of both languages and how each have diverged and continue to diverge from the source.

The PM probably did not expect the severe backlash and ridicule from Indonesians in general and rejection from Indonesian politicians who pride themselves with the creation and usage of the Indonesian language.

While technically Indonesian is an offshoot of old Malay, it’s as good as thinking French and Italian are similar because they’re offshoots of Latin so there shouldn’t be issues understanding each other.

How Malaysians and Indonesians perceive or understand the term Malay in itself is very different. Malaysians seem to see Malay as anyone Austronesian and Muslim with monolithic cultural elements. Malays to Indonesians are people of a certain minority ethnicity originating specifically from Riau and East Kalimantan that make up 3% of the Indonesian population. The Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, Batak, etc do not consider themselves Malay and have distinct cultures.

Just from the conversations I’ve had online it’s clear that Malay and Indonesian are different and it’s best to use a third language like English for the speakers to be mutually understood.

Woke up to a big reticulated rat #snake under the laundry.

Also called copperhead racer or ular rusuk kerbau in #Malay. It means ‘cow’s rib’ - not sure why.

Not venomous, but she sure is fierce! Faced us head on when we got near, like a boxer.

Plenty of them around here. I made a little #intaglio print of one awhile back, titled after the Malay proverb ‘melangkahi ular’ - to step over a snake, i.e to do something dangerous.
