Let's take a closer look at some of the #mammoth fossils we currently have on display at the Centre.
#DYK that mammoth teeth (aka molars), are common fossils in the Yukon? Mammoth molars are very distinctive, with hard vertical enamel plates. Because these plates formed a flat grinding surface, mammoth teeth were well suited to breaking down the tough grasses that flourished in Beringia during the last glacial period.

From what I understand is that many #iPhone users have also switched to one of the other apps (basically to anything but #Mastodon), like #IceCubes, #Toot, #Mammoth, #Mona or #Ivory. Some are free, others paid. You could check the posts from @feditips.

It’s a #lostbones #FossilFriday! 🐂🦥🐴🐘🐪🐟 This remarkable mammoth 🦷 has an even more remarkable story! Housed at the Interstate Park Ice Age Interpretive Center in Taylors Falls, WI - the tooth originated in #Minnesota.
It was discovered in 1987 by a heavy equipment operator excavating gravel from a Gray Cloud Island gravel deposit ~125 feet below the original surface!

Right now I’m using the official app but it’s really bare bone. I’m like you in that I’m tired of subscriptions so I haven’t really tried Ivory. I might take a peek at Mona. Happy #FossilFriday from the #Alaska State Museum! In the Lower 48, most #mammoth fossils are Columbian #mammoths, but the colder climates of the Last Frontier favored its hairy cousin. These woolly mammoth #tusks were found in the #permafrost around #Fairbanks, but they're common enough across Alaska that they've been named its state #fossil!

350000 years ago, just beyond the western edge of the icy #Schwarzwald, #spring has come to the #mammoth steppe. A raven flies over a group of steppe mammoths enjoying a cold bath in the Oos river, while a #Megaloceros grazes on some choice plants growing on the riverbanks. With the harsh winter in retreat for a few months, a flock of greylag geese migrates north, a buzzard hunts, and a small pack of wolves watch a herd of steppe #bison and some roe deer.
