Great Q for the five panelists on #ManagedRetreat and the private sector: "if you could live anywhere given climate risk where would you live?" Answers so far: Montreal (panelist already moved there), "there are no true climate havens," another equivocation, northern Minnesota, and a third equivocation.
I will say that not all of this is totally dystopian - there have been some really good conversations about how these data analytics can be used to drive investment and funding towards Justice40 efforts (this is the federal government efforts to ensure that communities experiencing environmental justice issues receive benefits of new federal funding) #ManagedRetreat
I feel like I am living in a Kim Stanley Robinson novel right now y'all #ManagedRetreat
ClimateAlpha is a climate data analysis tool for institutional investors and local planning officials, and here is what's going on under the hood. This is WILD #ManagedRetreat
I so appreciate this. We think of the Midwest as being "climate havens" but we have so many environmental justice and pollution issues already underway. If we're going to be actual climate havens we need as much help as we can to resolve our existing affordable housing and water infrastructure issues #ManagedRetreat
Glad this speaker from Wisconsin is talking about one of the biggest challenges of Midwestern receiving communities is state pre-emption of local climate action. This is 100% an issue in Ohio where our city officials are trying their best to do great work on climate change but our state legislature is a complete disgrace. I don't think folks in California & New York realize the sharp divisions between blue city governments and red state governments in the Midwest #ManagedRetreat
As someone who lives in a Midwestern city that is explicitly positioning itself as a climate haven, I am SUPER interested in this talk on receiving communities and the convergence of voluntary and involuntary migrants. What happens when the only kind of climate migrants that are welcomed are the ones perceived to drive economic development? #ManagedRetreat
Apparently Moody's has been buying up lots of climate risk analysis companies. If you are wondering what an example of this kind of company looks like, here's one: https://climatealpha.ai/home-buyers-sellers/ #ManagedRetreat
My guy: "We had an institutional investor client ask us 'What's the last possible moment we can stay invested in Miami?'" I 100% believe these conversations are happening literally every day based on my weirdo hobby of reading luxury real estate ads out of south Florida. A few years ago I detected a subtle but noticeable shift in the way properties were being advertised #ManagedRetreat
my guy here is literally talking about "climate risk resilient scores" for investment purposes. This is seriously straight out of a Kim Stanley Robinson novel #ManagedRetreat
this presenter from a climate data company (and also incidentally someone who mentioned Kim Stanley Robinson and the only presenter I've heard openly call out Republicans for their hostility to climate planning) that looks at real estate risks termed ESG as "Escape Stressed Geography" which is the kind of acronym revisionism I can get behind #ManagedRetreat
I really love it when an audience member asks a great question. Like the kind of question where you're like..... oh I'm gonna tuck that away to use sometime. (This audience member asked "if you had to rewrite this book about another city, which one would you choose?") #ManagedRetreat
listening to a Harvard Law prof (author of this new book about Charleston) talk about the role of government for climate adaptation. https://www.scrawford.net/ #ManagedRetreat
Very excited for Elyse Zavar's presentation on "Remembering after relocation: the role of commemoration in buyouts" https://hps.unt.edu/elyse-zavar-phd #ManagedRetreat
one of the most revelatory things I'm learning from the #ManagedRetreat conference is that most exercises in retreat or buyouts don't actually result in people moving that far - often within a few miles or 20 minutes. The upside of this means that local tax bases are not always as badly affected as many would assume.
totally fascinated with this presentation from Alizé Carrère critiquing the homogenous idealized/aspirational/speculative architecture of climatopias #ManagedRetreat

Very interesting how often the #ManagedRetreat conference panelists are talking about community histories, historic preservation, and cultural identity when it comes to climate adaptation. So again I have to ask - why aren't more archivists and cultural memory workers deeply engaged with climate change work? (this is a rhetorical question. there are a lot of reasons why, some of them are systematic and inherent to the field but some of them do not reflect well on archivists)
Virtually attending the #ManagedRetreat conference hosted at Columbia University this week. Had hoped to be in NYC but personal issues prevented me from attending in-person. Will thread any major takeaways here #climatechange

While I have some sympathy for these people, I don't think we should be bailing people out who choose to buy in high risk areas. Do your homework.

Why the Gold Coast's 'ever-decreasing' sand supply poses a planning headache

>One of those options, which is the real elephant in the room, is managed retreat," he said.
>"[It's] the very last step
Perhaps but in order to manage the retreat it would take many decades, so it needs to be started now.
As a GC resident, it's one of the main reasons I am leaving. You just have to look to Lismore for evidence of what happens when you ignore the warnings of experts (in 1978 a report was issued saying managed retreat was necessary)
One storm surge from a cyclone and the devastation will be immense.
I can't think of a more in denial area if Australia (maybe Northern Australia) then the LNP stronghold of the #GoldCoast
