Also, #Taiwan 🇳🇫 was never part of #China 🇨🇳. Both were parts of the #Manchu Empire, but neither Taiwan nor China were part of each other.

de Harlez, former professor at KU Leuven, should perhaps be better known among Chinese (esp Qing) historians. He translated various works; wrote voluminously about all sorts of topics inc histories of the Jurchen Jin Empire, of Neo-Confucianism, of color perception, and an introduction to Manchu.

I recently finished reading "Translating Early Modern China: Ilegible Cities" by my pal Carla Nappi.

It's a wildly intoxicating book about #history and #memory, about #chinese and #manchu languages, about the slipperiness of #language and #translation, and about the blurred boundaries between #fiction and #nonfiction.

And the whole thing is deliciously framed as a homage to #ItaloCalvino.

It's totally worth a read.
