In his later years, Manet was confined to his apartment due to the paralysis of a leg. Friends visited him in his studio, bringing flowers, which he loved and painted. I particularly love this floral still life from that period.

When I learned about Édouard Manet's "Olympia," the analysis focused on the parallel's to Titian's "Venus of Urbino" and the shocking nature of portraying a sex worker as the reclining nude. That was about it.

Being about to talk about Laure, the model for the maid, and the social commentary Manet is making by including a black model in this role, makes for such a fuller discussion I'm able to present to students today.

My Wordle score as the number of people in a painting. Today, Manet's, 'The Railway'. Painted from the garden of an artist friend Alphonse Hirsch, overlooking Gare Saint–Lazare. Using as models his friend's daughter and fellow artist (and favourite model) Victorine Meurent. It is the last painting he did of Victorine who was also the model for his 'Olympia' and the 'Luncheon on the Grass'.

My Wordle score as the number of people in a painting. Today it's Manet's, 'The Dead Christ with Angels'. A magnificent painting even if Christ’s wound is on the wrong side and the scene is a misinterpretation of John 20:12 when Mary Magdalene enters the tomb of Jesus. At the time critics denounced the work for its realism suggesting the figure of the battered Christ more closely resembled the body of a dead coal miner than the son of God.

Édouard Manet, The Execution of Emperor Maximilian, 1867

Maximilian was encouraged by Napoleon III to become Emperor of Mexico following the French intervention in Mexico. Maximilian arrived in Mexico in May 1864.The Empire collapsed after Napoleon withdrew French troops in 1866.

Maximilian was captured on May 1867, sentenced to death at a court martial, and executed.

Manet was inspired to start work on a painting, heavily influenced by Goya's The Third of May 1808
