I've seen #Manhattanhenge in 2007 and I remember it as a nice evening in the city, phones didn't have cameras yet and New Yorkers didn't really care about the sun going down perfectly aligned with the east–west grid of the streets. The phenomenon was named Manhattanhenge by #NeildeGrasseTyson and the Hayden Planetarium. It became quite a popular photo opportunity since then.

And in several 1000 years archaeologists will claim the city was built to worship the sun (and not money)

Known as #Manhattanhenge, this mesmerizing event draws throngs of onlookers, both locals and tourists, who eagerly flock to capture the perfect image of the sun's golden rays bathing the city in a warm glow

#Manhattanhenge, when sunset is aligned with the Manhattan street grid. Taken on W 114th St. and Amsterdam Avenue.
Went back to my favorite spot to view this year’s Manhattanhenge on 42nd St. Having learned my lesson from last year, I knew better than to try to get any sort of decent position for the classic shot of the ‘henge. Instead, I decided to focus on the madhouse of people trying to photograph the event on their phones.
This is a small taste of the mad crowd of phones trying to document it (which they’re all a day early for anyway, the phenomenon happens tomorrow 😂)
Tonight is #Manhattanhenge (this is from July 2011, so technically not Manhattanhenge, but still pretty)

One from New York City. I was staying for just a few days and looked on Google to see what I could photograph close to the hotel. It turned out to be Manhattanhenge where the sun sets along many of the streets and 42nd Street is one of the best. It was maybe three or four blocks away, and this is what I saw. Speaking of #NewYorkCity #photography obsessions, I was singularly focused on capturing this past summer's #Manhattanhenge from the #TudorCity bridge in view of the #ChryslerBuilding. My first crack at it was a bust since it was chock FULL of people, but repeat visits over subsequent weeks netted me some AMAZING captures, and probably one of my all-time favorite #sunsets.

Here's one for #Fotomontag #photography #photomonday from this year's #manhattanhenge.

Okay, here's my least terrible #Manhattanhenge photo from Thursday. Really hoping that I do better tonight: we're going to a new location & the sun is supposedly going to be even more aligned.
Update: for me, #manhattanhenge was a bust. This happens every time I don't plan properly. The old wisdom will always be true: good planning = good results
