"I sat down with writers and editors at Jewish Currents (Mari Cohen, David Klion, and Raphael Magarik) for a team-up of podcasts to talk about the movie. We discuss the way the movie portrays tensions within the Jewish community, its grappling with the history of the , its avoidance of direct portrayals of the effect of , and its critique of the ."

My last word on the film is a quote from Leo Szilard (a fleeting presence in the film, but a key historical figure who wrote the “Einstein letter”).

Speaking in Cincinnati in January 1947 Szilard said:

“Mass murderers have always commanded the attention of tho public, and atomic scientists are no exception to rule”

"Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed."

“You question, why are they up there in our sacred mountains? Why can’t we go fishing up there anymore? Why can’t we collect our pottery clay there anymore?” said elder Kathy Wan Povi Sanchez of San Ildefonso Pueblo, thinking back to when she was young. “The secrecy of the atomic bomb creation also kept a lot of our people in harm’s way because [the lab] wouldn’t tell us when the experiments were being detonated,” she continued, recalling how explosives were tested in surrounding canyons. “They didn’t want people to know what they were doing.”

Conversely, this narrative could also use a little perspective. No mention of the WMDs Japan planed.
Unit 731 bioweapons field tested against civilians in China?
Fu-Go balloon bomb delivery system? Operation Cherry Blossoms at Night set to kill the civilians in SoCal for Sept, 1945?

Tell the whole story.

The movie is a triumph of the American narrative of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A story entirely told from the perpetrator's perspective. No voice of the victim. An obsession over the brilliance of manufacturing weapons of mass destruction.

Interesting article! The building in which I currently work is named after him -- and the picture of Curran's unveiling of the plaque looks like it was provided to the BBC by colleagues in Archives & Special Collections.

Entirely unrelated to , I learned today that Wolfgang Pauli was invited to the Manhattan Project and he said no for "reasons of conscience".

Also just read a letter of his that spoke very negatively of the uses of physics in warfare. (In Atom and Archetype - The Pauli/Jung Letters.)

He was not considered a nice person by any means FWIW.
