This is a card I picked up in the southern area of Osaka called Sakai. Along with this design, there were 12 other art deco manhole covers. Being a huge fan of art deco, this one was a must-have for me.

I got this card in Atami, Shizuoka, Japan. It depicts the climactic scene in Ozaki’s novel ‘Konjiki Yasha’ (Diamond Demon), a tragic love story of Kan-ichi and Omiya. Kan-ichi is the man Omiya was to marry. When a wealthy merchant’s son proposed with a giant diamond she refused Kan-ichi. When Kan-ichi found out, he proclaimed Omiya had been swayed by the Diamond Demon. This story made Atami a very popular tourist spot in the 1600’s and it’s still so today! #manholecards #manholecovers #マンホールカード
