I fear that the open, interoperable web we used to grow up with where users had more freedom might disappear. Creeping restrictions by Google will eventually affect most users even if they seem insignificant now.
If you are wondering what I did to my #website... well, this is what i did, lmao
Me and @gianmarcogg03 have decided to block users who are using #chrome or #chromium based shit browsers in response to #manifestv3.
For more information on why we are doing this: https://gianmarco.gg/blinky/
TL;DR: Manifest v3 will kill #adblockers.

Do you care about an open internet, where discussions and security are protected by communities, rather than by large private companies?
Please install #Firefox if you haven't done so yet!
#Google is increasing the speed of their #enshittification of even their #OpenSource projects like #Chrome with #ManifestV3 and #WEI and #Android stopping development for core apps like #Phone and #Messages, #FOSS projects should stop relying on them for their codebases. I'd love to see @Vivaldi fork #Firefox and @calyxos base their code on a #mobile #Linux #distro and help break up the current #monopoly.
Google can't be relied on for any codebase.

#Google apparently wants to lock the web in its foul embrace with #DRM https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/07/googles-web-integrity-api-sounds-like-drm-for-the-web/
#manifestv3 must be stopped NOW.
The declarativeNetRequest (DNR) extension API is now available to all extensions in Firefox, granting better privacy and performance. Yet another example of how to do #ManifestV3 right by Mozilla.

#ManifestV3 is still on the way, and will break many #privacy focused extensions. #Firefox will like everyone know continue supporting MV2 extensions, but did you know #Brave will too?

"High-severity type confusion weakness in the Chrome V8 #JavaScript engine" exploited in attacks for months now.
That's why potential targets should use @torproject 🧅 browser , and why I strive to maintain @noscript on Chrome despite the #ManifestV3 woes.

Google pushed the Manifest V3 deadline now to 2024 (another 6 months for Manifest V2 extensions):
https://developer.chrome.com/docs/extensions/migrating/mv2-sunset/
The original deadline would have been in two months; yet only 23.84 % of the Chrome extensions have upgraded:

Edge already pushed the limit to at least 2024 before. Mozilla hasn't communicated any plans to remove MV2 APIs. They want to keep them around until alternatives exist, but extension can already experiment with MV3 APIs
Spent WAY too much time this morning on the ins-and-outs of browser screen capturing. It's a much more fraught area than I remember when I was doing something similar from a MacOS Cocoa apps a decade and half ago.

I’m going to play the devil's advocate on #ManifestV3. We all know what Google's motivations are, but the webRequest API is both faster and safer for the user than allowing full page access on all websites.
The real issue is the limitations around blocklists size and the inability to update them dynamically.
Safari's Content Blockers (2015) are conceptually similar, but since Safari Extensions are distributed via companion apps, they can create multiple lists and update them in the background.
Honestly struggling with #Chrome's Manifest V3 limitations regarding its background script. Can't get any long-lived processes working, and managing hydration of states during suspension and wake up is troublesome as #serviceworkers don't fire events for this.
I'm honestly afraid that I'll just have to fall back and get the browser extension to rely on the desktop app.. And this really defeats all the strides @buttercup has made with its browser extension being its own application. Don't want to do it but I'm seeing no other *reliable* way.
Anyone else out there building #browserextensions hitting this road block? Would really appreciate any words of encouragement or suggestions as to what to do here..

Already sick of #chrome’s manifest V3 for extensions. The requirement to have service workers instead of background daemons means I can’t keep my password manager’s data in memory.
What am I supposed to do, decrypt the user’s vault every time the service worker wakes?
Anyone have any better ideas? I’d prefer to not have to rely on the desktop app for the “live” vault data, as having a stand alone extension is valuable as a feature in itself.

Wondering if many users of #Chrome, and Chrome based browsers like #MicrosoftEdge, #Opera, and #SamsungInternet realise the shit card #Google is dealing them when they deploy #ManifestV3 into Chrome this year, which is designed to stop #adblock addons from working.
Just imagine ALL those juicy intrusive annoying ads with no way to block them.
Think I will be sticking with Firefox!

Autofill will work properly on Chromium browsers one of these days.
I never had it work on Chrome and when I switched to Brave after Manifest v3 it doesn't work on Brave either.
Not that it matters much, just a few extra clicks to login to sites.
