Getting Short
The fire that was threatening our furniture (and my MANUSCRIPTS) has been officially classified as under control. There's one worry put to rest. The home that we've been waiting to move into is slowly nearing completion. The water and electricity are both working now and the exterior of the building is finished and awaiting the stairways. All that remains is to finish and clea

@culhebrewmss This one returned from the Center for Conservation of Art and Historic Artifacts a couple of months ago - the starch in the pages had stuck them together so the book couldn't be opened. CCAHA painstakingly conserved the manuscript page by page until it could be used once again. 15th century, Mizrahi hand.

A different version of "erasing," this time early 15th century style.

One of my constant curiosities in cataloging is the question of how long it took a scribe to copy a manuscript. Thankfully, they occasionally answer this question. In the of APSTCH PIRA 00026 (pictured below), the scribe ܐܒܪܗܡ ܟܗܢܐ says that he began copying it on 21 Tammúz (July) 1861 CE and it was finished on 23 ʾElúl (September). So, it took about 2 months to copy this particular manuscript (of around 200 folios).

To the surprise of no one who works with , can be such a rich source of all kinds of information. Take this manuscript--APSTCH AYMA 00014 (which I posted a picture from yesterday)--for example. This image is the final page, with the colophon on the right surrounded by a decorative border. There are a few interesting things about this colophon that I will thread here below.

A cool feature of some : at the point in the Anaphora (or 'mass') where they celebrate the Eucharist, certain words are given calligraphic emphasis. The below example is from APSTCH AYMA 00013, which can be viewed here: w3id.org/vhmml/readingRoom/vie

Definitely asked before, but what are your recommended applications (or homegrown systems/procedures) for palaeographical transcription?

Most of what I've done has been in in-house repositories, FromThePage, etc. I have some projects coming up where I need to be more self-hosted, as it were. I currently use a Mac, and my potential list includes Tropy, GenScriber, and Transcript.

Thoughts? Comments? Recommendations?

For those of you who followed me on that other site, you may know that I love to post images. Well, a few weeks ago, I found perhaps my favorite bird decoration ever.

The manuscript is CPB 00492. In addition to the striking colors, I love how the tops of the tall letters (taw and alef, and even the mims) are interwoven and turn into little baby bird heads waiting to be fed by the larger birds.

In general, I have found the collections from India to be a rich source of both grammatical and lexical . It's clear that the Syriac heritage communities in India have maintained a strong desire to keep the Syriac language alive.

Time for some more fun: This manuscript (APSTCH AYMA 00009) appears to be a resource for someone learning Syriac. But it's not a grammar or a dictionary; rather, it's basically an opposing meanings phrasebook. For example, the first line has two phrases: ܬܐ ܠܗܪܟܐ and ܙܠ ܠܬܡܢ: "come here" and "go there." And the second line has "go up" and "come down." So on and so forth.
