If you can get to Oxford on 25–26 September, then you might be interested in "ARTFUL MAPS"

visit.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/event/

I don't see the program online, but it was just emailed to me. I really wish I could hop across the pond to participate. Several of my favorite younger map scholars (Radu Leca, Man Zheng, Jack Swab, Patrick Ellis), several long-standing colleagues, and lots of people who are new to me!

@LisaFaginDavis -- just saw a link to a book published through Google Play (ugh) claiming a straightforward translation of part of the Voynich Manuscript ... as a verbal map of a 1444 rescue mission.

play.google.com/store/books/de

The author does not allude at all to the cryptic nature of the ms, just presents it straight. Which makes me wonder.

Anyway, it made me think of you! Sorry if you already know it!!

New essay by me just published in the wonderful journal "Imago Mundi" on the origins of the study of map history in Paris in the 1830s through 1850s. You can read the abstract and there is a download link at mappingasprocess.net/blog/2023

Copies of the paper are limited, so please download only if you're actually going to use the work

Martin Jeske's dissertation -- Ein Imperium wird vermessen: Kartographie, Kulturtransfer und Raumerschließung im Zarenreich (1797–1919) – was just published OPEN ACCESS

It deals with the Russian empire's attempts in 19c and 20c to map its territory to the same standards as western European states --

Holy Amazing Mercatorballs! My wife just forwarded me this from twitter (which I have abandoned).

Can anyone confirm that this perversity is real, or is this some insane joke by Dr Field???? Does anyone know what the character of the debate was, and why the ICA was going for an "official" map projection in the first place?

('cos this is making history)

Here's a fun little story map about early modern maps of the Holy Land ... haaretz.com/archaeology/2023-0

(image = 1493 Berllinghieri map, derived from the small ms map by Burchard of Sion, which I plan on reproducing in a current writing project [more news soon...])

meanwhile - prep for the exhibition of chromolithography and is continuing -- I today assembled a host of trade cards to go in a single frame (all hinged, I think, and closely packed, like this image) ... the bottom row were not, however, chromos (tinted and early screen work), marking the "end of chromo". Good see that my work with the digital images make a nice rectangular grouping !!

With all these, I have a total of 92 works in the exhibition. Wow!!!

@mappery if the circles of the meridians are are equally spaced, which they seem to be, then azimuthal equidistant in normal aspect. Used since 16c for maps of polar caps and occasionally the world. Richard Edes Harrison used as the basis for his “air-age” maps, starting 1936 … Harrison’s map was the basis for UN logo, and in turn is the favored world map of flat earthers.

Well advanced on planning for the next OML exhibition, on maps and chromolithography. Here's one of the first items, from the section of other techniques to print maps in color, showing an example of 18c two-color printing from copper plates. One of J N Bellin's charts for the dépôt de la marine (1753).

More on this exhibition soon!
