The first paper I turned to - "Repatriation from Scottish Museums: A Short Report" by @aberdeenuni's Neil Curtis and @hunteriandir Steph Scholten - stirred memories of past defeats https://www.ejournals.eu/SAACLR/2022/2-2022/art/23356/ @EdUniLibraries #AFROMET #magdala #maqdala #ethiopia

@lootplunder @britishmuseum Sir David Wilson, former director of #BritishMuseum in his 2003 book British Museum: A History, conceded that the plunder of #Maqdala treasures was "one of the less glorious episodes in its history". Ironic that these objects of colonial greed and plunder are not even on display.
A big big deal. Thanks for the link @iyoba4u. Does anyone know where this is in Addis? Would be very grateful if anyone could also get a closeup of the labels.

It's not all crowns and sacred carvings. Today's addition to the Ethiopian plunder database - a pair of curved iron scissors brought back by the @britishmuseum's expert on Britain's 1868 Abyssinia "expedition". Strangely, not on display. #ethiopia #maqdala https://www.theprinceandtheplunder.com/2018/01/13/scissors/
Thrilled to see my book "The Prince and the Plunder" in this week's Economist. It calls it a "vivid new book" and includes an interview with @frezerhaile who takes the whole repatriation debate on into new territory. #ethiopia #loot #plunder #maqdala https://www.economist.com/culture/2023/02/23/how-an-ethiopian-prince-came-to-be-buried-at-windsor-castle

Three more items for the Ethiopian plunder database today. Gold discs taken "from the cross on the altar at Magdala", now in the British Museum. Some of Ethiopia's Maqdala plunder was last seen on display in a Leeds art show in 1868. Where is it now? The Yorkshire Post covers my appeal asking locals to check their attics and cupboards for the loot. #maqdala #ethiopia #loot #theprinceandtheplunder https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/heritage-and-retro/heritage/historians-bid-to-trace-lost-loot-plundered-by-the-british-during-colonial-war-in-ethiopia-that-was-last-seen-in-leeds-general-infirmary-in-1868-4017467

A photostat copy of an #Ethiopian manuscript. A commentary on the hymns & anaphoras of the Virgin Mary. According to the archival doc, the original manuscript "was taken from the house of King Tewodros #Maqdala in 1868 by Lt J. R. Diss, Royal Artillery."
The MS is now lost.

Who knew? Ethiopia's Emperor Tewodros II is a character in the computer game Age of Empires III. His catchphrase: "We have purchased a few guns to turn the tides of war." Wonder if you can re-fight Maqdala?" #maqdala #Ethiopia https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Emperor_Tewodros#History
🧵6/6 And one issue for Ethiopia. Greece pretty much won the argument when it built the @acropolismuseum. Is it time for a Maqdala museum in Addis, in Gondar or on top of Maqdala itself? Perhaps next to a memorial to Alemayehu. #Ethiopia #maqdala #magdala @alulapan @lemnsissay
