William Wells Brown was born into slavery #OTD in 1815. He managed to escape when he was roughly 19 years old, learned to read and write, and within 15 years of freedom was touring Europe and the US extolling abolition, as well as writing prolifically, including his memoir. He also worked on a steamboat on Lake Erie, with which he helped dozens of former slaves find freedom.
