There is a lot to learn from how the genomes from the recent #MarburgVirus outbreak was made available.
Data use restrictions can be applied even when shared openly.

6/6 Let's talk about Equatorial Guinea.
I'm quite willing to bet real dollars that if anyone asked 20 friends to name their top five vacation destinations, Equatorial Guinea would show up in less than 2% of the results.
Let alone ask how many had ever even heard of this country or could point it out on a map.
A domestically imposed travel ban (not countries against EG, but EG shutting down its ports/borders for a week or two) would be easy, and effective.
5/6 "Even if a trial can get off the ground, it’s unlikely that enough cases will develop before the current outbreak comes under control..., Edmunds says. “It’s a double-edged sword, isn’t it? It’s good news for public health and the people of Equatorial Guinea, but perhaps bad news for science.”"
If something that is good news for #PublicHealth is also "perhaps bad news for science",
I don't like the sound of that #science.

"evidence pointing to the effectiveness of any vaccine could be gathered across multiple outbreaks, researchers at the meeting said."
Again, we can contain the outbreak right now and continue to work on vaccines in the lab over time.
Yet...
“I cannot emphasize enough the need for speed,” said John Edmunds, an epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, at the WHO meeting."
Why?
3/6 "But the odds are against a successful trial, they say, because other control measures such as quarantine could end the outbreak before a single vaccine dose can be administered."
In other words, they could impose quarantines and other measures TODAY and "end the outbreak" BEFORE a vaccine - regardless of its development stage - could be administered.
Translation: we DON'T NEED a new vaccine for this RIGHT NOW.
2/6 "The World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland, convened an urgent meeting yesterday to discuss the feasibility of testing Marburg vaccines that are in various stages of development."
Be clear, the issue here is not testing in a lab. The issue is testing on people in on-the-ground situations.
And, what are they wanting to "test"? Vaccines that are in "various stages of development", which I translate as "underdeveloped, not fully proven" vaccines.
