#MarchFourthAndDie is just a clever pun I came up with last night, and I de idea that since I've been in a #DeathMetal mood lately, why not revisit some #WarMetal because... well, look around.

I hate war. I despise war. And that's why I love Slayer's Angel of Death.

The words "Auschwitz - the meaning of pain - the way that I want you to die." If you're a Slayer fan, you know this song like you know your own face. One of the greatest #ThrashMetal songs of all time.

I used to wrestle with it because of my own heritage. I mentioned my grandpapa Max back in December on his birthday (IIRC). He was born to a Jewish French-Lithuanian family and was nearly caught by the Nazis along with his sister, my late grandaunt Helene. He later joined and fought with the Resistance. He met my grandmama near the end of the war and they emigrated to Canada in the late 40s. They converted to a very lax Catholicism and never really adhered to the faith. I was raised non-religious.

My grandpapa passed away around the time I got into Slayer, and I was learning more about the Holocaust in that time at school and in movies.

I've never practiced Judaism. I was Protestant for a little while before I got into metal, but I lost interest. I've always been fascinated by religion, and mortified at the same time. My own belief in a higher power has changed over the years, and I now keep my beliefs close, rather than espouse. I believe spirituality is personal.

That being said, others *would* definitely identify me as Jewish. Israel would. Neo nazis would. But I do not. Semitic, yes. But not Jewish. I do not hold the faith, and my mother was not Jewish.

Regardless, I will stand up against antisemitism as sure as I will against racism, transphobia homophobia and misogyny.

With Slayer, the question was about antisemitism, and in my own, singular opinion, I do not think the song is antisemitic. It is not a celebration of the horrors of Josef Mengele. It is a record, a testament, cold and clinical. It's a reminder.

War metal is not much different than War movies. One is primarily visual, the other is auditory. I have my preference. Some glorify War, some demonize it.

And at the end of the day, I listen to metal primarily for the music. If I can even understand the vocals, that's a nice bonus.
