I surprised myself with how spicy I made the sesame sauce for the mushrooms we had tonight. I put Sichuan flower peppers (花椒) in it. I am doing this every time.

I planned a little poorly, so we are having a rather large dinner tonight, so I can cook some things before they turn. Here's what's on tap: steak cooked with the sous vide, steamed eggplant in a vingear/soy sauce dressing, mashed potatoes, king oyster mushrooms in a spicy sesame paste sauce, and some baked fish fillets.

Update on a previous update: I still smell like garlic .. again, but also ginger today. Making some store fried snow peas with Chinese sausage, eggs with tomato, and a noodle dish called zha Jiang Mian (炸酱面) for dinner tonight.

Nothing interesting to report food wise here. The kids were begging for lasagna, so I made some. We’ll have steak and leftover lasagna for dinner tomorrow night. Then, I need to think of what else to cook this week. Now that it is sort of cold, I am thinking of breaking out the yunnan steam pot and making some chicken. Gotta find good chicken, though.

Tonight was a simple meal of stir-fried eggs and tomato (西红柿炒鸡蛋). A lot of families make this and they probably all make it a bit differently. My family is from the north, so ours is not sweet.

No cooking posts yesterday and today because I am getting over a bout of nausea. Doing better, but I don’t want lingering food smells around. We had frozen dumplings tonight. The best part is always drinking some of the cooking water with the vinegar and chili oil we dip them in mixed in. Dumping soup (饺子汤)FTW!

Gonna make tonkatsu tomorrow night.

Cooking a lot today, but it is nothing too difficult. Spoiler alert: I usually don’t make dishes that have a difficult prep because I’m kinda dumb & clumsy. Anywho, I am making some chicken thighs with jasmine rice and some cabbage, mushrooms, and gluten puffs( think fried, puffy seitan). Just average home cooking, but it will be tasty! Maybe I’ll post some photos.

This morning I gathered various dry ingredients for 8 Treasure Congee ( 腊八粥) including lotus seeds. As I measured out some seeds, I thought about how distinctive the entire plant is. The flowers, the roots, and the seeds all have a distinct and maybe a little unusual appearance. It's pretty cool. Also thinking of making some lotus root, wood ear, celery, and carrot stir fry, if the store has any.

In other food news, our kids absolutely housed the lasagna I made Thursday night. Mr. 9 says that only Pizza Hut pizza is better than my lasagna.

The theme of tonight's dinner is the children and adults of the Wu family have very different tastes and that I needed to use up some odds and ends. So, we will dine on the following tonight: Tuna casserole (the kids love this strange and kind of gross but good concoction from my childhood), steak cooked in the sous vide (the kids will eat a little, but generally not meat fans), king oyster mushrooms in spicy sesame sauce (spouse and I will compete to eat all of this while the kids think it is nasty), and green beans (everyone will likely eat some, but Ms. 5 is 50/50). Also, I am using frozen green beans tonight. I'll microwave them a tiny bit, dry them a bit in the colander, and finish off in the wok. For green beans I use a little oil, fry to they are a little blistered, add garlic and a tiny bit of sesame oil and finish them up.

Last night, we ate all of the Lion's Head meatballs (狮子头), so it's a simple dinner for us tonight. Stir fried egg and tomato, stir fried Chinese sausage with snow peas, and rice for dinner.

We're still eating leftovers from the lion's head meatball (狮子头)so, we'll have that and some rice for dinner. I'll also make some vinegar stir-fried cabbage. I'm going to use a recipe tonight, which I don't do anymore. It's from Hannah Che's cookbook, the Vegan Chinese Kitchen. The recipe has different ingredients for the sauce than the way I learned to cook it. I bought her cookbook after hearing her on the Splendid Table. I was aware that there are strong vegetarian/vegan traditions within Chinese cooking, but that was really the extent of my knowledge.

Stir-fried more napa cabbage to add to the leftover lion's head meatballs (狮子头)and that will simmer to reheat for about an hour. I've prepped all the ingredients for the eggplant, bell pepper, and potato stir fry (地三鲜), and I'll make that in a about 15 minutes. It is not hard to make, and it doesn't take long to make, but it does take patience. We'll have some leftover rice and my spouse is baking sweet potatoes, in case the kids want them.

I found ground pork this morning, so I can make lion’s head meatballs (狮子头)as planned. I’ve mixed the ingredients for meatballs and it’s setting in the fridge. After lunch, I’ll prep the cabbage and start cooking. We’ll have leftovers tomorrow and some stir fried eggplant, pepper, and potato (地三鲜).

Dinner tonight is leftover spaghetti and meatballs heated up in a cast iron skillet. Probably some broccoli on the side. I buy frozen broccoli, heat a little in the microwave, dump it in a colander to dry it off, then stir fry it in the wok a little. Tomorrow is lion’s head meatballs and cabbage (狮子头)… if I can find ground pork in any store around here.
