January 9, 1799: Italian mathematician and philosopher Maria Gaetana #Agnesi died in Milan. Recognized early on as a child prodigy, she was fluent in seven languages by age eleven and was studying #ballistics and geometry at age fifteen. She was the first woman to write a #mathematics handbook, discussing both differential and integral calculus, and she was the first woman appointed as a mathematics professor at a university (University of Bologna).
