In 1939, though being denied by the Daughters of the Revolution (DAR) the opportunity to sing at Constitutional Hall in Washington, DC, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt provided a gift to her to perform a concert on the steps of Lincoln Memorial. The monumental day was on Resurrection Day, April 9th, with over 75, 000 individuals in attendance, as well as a huge radio crowd of millions.

Karsh developed a distinctive portrait style...U[sing] artificial lighting in order to achieve dramatic effects...Karsh would conduct extensive research relating to the sitter, studying existing photographs and often meeting with them in advance.
The Magnani portrait is one of my all time favorite works of art.
