On 4 December 1872 the brigantine Mary Celeste was found abandoned in the North Atlantic Ocean mid-way between the Azores and Portugal. The crew were not on board and no trace of them has ever been found.
The ship’s name is Mary, not Marie Celeste although the latter was popularised after the publication of a fictional account by Arthur Conan Doyle called ”J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" which names the ship Marie.
