2022 has brought back some of our worst nightmares: war in Ukraine, high inflation, the risk of recession.

For 2023 I wish you all peace, prosperity and more acts of kindness and affection than ever before.

I love Johnson’s articles on language in The Economist. So, I was surprised at his superficial experiment of taking a single sentence and translating it into French and then back to English using Google Translate to make generalizations about the future of translation.

I wonder why such superficial articles about translation are so frequent in the media. Maybe translators should write about it themselves.

How The Maltese Language Won The Battle Between English And Italian

The rivalry between Maltese sympathies to the UK and Italy has deep roots in Malta’s history.

Before the arrival of the British, Italian was the official language in Malta.

During World War II Maltese replaced Italian as the language of the Law Courts, and became a requirement for employment in the Civil Service.

“Linguists, logicians, and philosophers, for at least the first half of the 20th century, resisted the idea that language is in the brain.

It took an entire century — from around 1860 to 1960 — for the ideas that language is in the brain and that language is a calculus to meet, for neurology and linguistics to blend into neurolinguistics.”

When entering different markets, brands conduct research to make sure they are appealing there.

Occasionally, however, something gets overlooked – leading to some hilarious linguistic gaffes.

Such as...

KFC’s ’Eat your fingers off.’

Moral of the story:

Choose your translators well when going global.
