Just harvested a basket of marigolds for stringing into a garland for the front of our house. We're getting some rain and the early whispers of fall here in Cali 𧑠Time to slowly begin the process of breaking down the garden and button up for winter. Plum jam and pepper sauces are next.

The big main bed has had all the garlic harvested, there remains #onions, #leeks, #shallots & other heirloom #tomatoes. Some βDay of the Deadβ #marigolds have returned! My #zinnias, #pumpkins and #squash have all burst through the woodchip layer. Soon this whole #garden bed will be criss-crossed by vines.

I planted them because they are supposed to repeal pests, but the more I read about companion planting, the more that I realize most of the recommendations arenβt based on any sort of hard evidence.
After this year, no more planting marigolds near my fruits & veggies. #Gardening.

Today is Friday, May 19th.
Saturday, May 20, the mounds will be made and corn will be planted. #Marigolds and #Sunflowers will be planted also.
Next we wait for #beans and #pumpkins, #squash, #melons & #zucchini planting time.
While we wait for the corn, raised beds around the edge will be made for traditional garden plants like #tomatoes, #peppers, #lettuce, etc.

1. Start with 2 lge planters. Mine are 75x35cm.
2. Remove cat from 1st planter. Fill planter with soil. Repeat for 2nd.
3. Thoroughly water soil. Sooth wet, indignant cat.
5. Remove cat; press holes in soil about 20cm apart, 1/2 finger deep.
6. Divide # seeds by # holes. Remove cat from planters and add quotient (up to ~3 seeds) to each hole, pushing soil in on top as you go.
7. Seeds sprout in 7-10 days, except where the cat sleeps.
