It goes door to door challenging occupants to a battle of wits. If victorious, the Mari Lwyd wins food and ale, then grants the household good luck for the following year.

The Mari Lwyd (English Gray Mare) is a Welsh midwinter custom to celebrate the New Year, but which originally took place during a period from Christmas to the end of January.
